Unleash The 2023 Toyota GR Corolla

After much anticipation, the powerful, nimble, and agile hot hatch is making its way to the Toyota lineup with the first ever 2023 GR Corolla.

Expected Performance

The 2023 GR Corolla is powered by a 1.6L 3-cylinder direct-injected turbocharged engine, delivering 300 hp and 273 lb.-ft. of torque to the GR Corolla. Designed to deliver responsive and deliberate performance around corners and on the open road. Paired with a 6-speed manual transmission and Toyota’s rally developed GR All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) powertrain allowing drivers to choose between 60-40, 50-50, or 30-70 power distribution to the front and rear wheels. For a more detailed list of the GR Corolla, preliminary specifications scroll down to the table at the bottom of this article.

Design

The GR Corolla is set to launch in two package options, the Core and Circuit Edition. Designed to be lightweight and aerodynamic, yet powerful and agile.

The Core Model is set to be available later this calendar year in a selection of color options (White, Black, and Supersonic Red) with color-matched roof and rear lip spoiler, GR Four stamped side rockers, and wide-fender flairs. The interior features 5-passenger seating and sports GR logoed fabric sport seats.

The Circuit Edition is a limited model available for 2023. Available in a selection of colors (White, Supersonic Red, and Heavy Metal) with GR Four stamped side rockers, wide-fender flairs, a forged carbon-fiber roof, vented bulge hood, and a sporty rear spoiler. The interior features Brin Naub suede-trimmed sport seating and a launch-year-exclusive Morizo signed shift knob.

Both models feature an all-new Toyota Multimedia System with touchscreen, as well as Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0) system standard.

Built-In Safety

All GR Corolla models come equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0) features including enhancements from updated system sensors with enhanced detection capabilities. TSS 3.0 also includes:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection,
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist,
  • Lane Tracing Assist,
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control,
  • Automatic High Beams,
  • Road Sign Assist, and
  • Toyota’s Rear Seat Reminders.

On top of the other Safety Sense Features, The GR Corolla will come equipped with Blind Spot Monitors, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Hill Start Assist.

What Does “GR” Stand For

After all this, you might still be wondering what “GR” stands for and that’s GAZOO Racing, Toyota's product line tuned for performance. In 2007, Akio Toyoda was interested in expanding Toyota’s use of racing in its car development activities. To start Toyoda chose to enter the 24 Hours Nürburgring, a grueling endurance race held through the German forest. At the time it was not a Toyota activity, so the team was known as GAZOO Racing.

Developing a GR model leaves no stone or road unturned, leaving room for engineers and technicians to dial in acceleration and performance worthy to brandish the GR badge. As TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s first vehicle developed and manufactured for the North American market, the GR Corolla tackles every essence of the GAZOO Racing brand.
